If so how many pannels would you need, and what would the equipment cost?

Yes. How many panels depends on your wattage needs.
How much it costs depends on a lot of things.

Every dollar that you save in power use, will save you $5 in power generation. Any one can do this, the only problem is that one has to pay for the power generation up front instead power use of over time. look for "net metering" this will allow your meter to run backwards when power use is low and generation is high. First buy CFL light bulbs, then a sunfrost refrigerator. Most of us Renewable Energy people use less than 400k watts per month of power, most homes start at 1,000k watts. You can see that most have a lot of work to do, beforehand.
