Hi guys, my husband and I have done a major budget to try and cut down on things we don’t use or need, starting with SKY TV, food expenses, phone bill, gym and so on. So far we have made a saving of £170 by cutting all these things, I can still run every morning for free, and we watch TV online anyway (BBC iplayer) – technically the licence people said we don’t need a licence for playback programmes only live ones, so that’s a £11 per month saving.

What about water, electric and gas? We’re with EDF energy for electricity and gas, thames water for water – what do you pay. We live in a 2 bed 2 bath apartment, with no kids and we’re hardly ever here, usually evenings from around 8 ish on average mon – fri and home at weekends sometimes.
We have a dishwasher which we run once a day and do washing about 2 – 3 times weekly. We shower daily at least once, at the most twice. I remember paying £16 at one point staying in a one bed flat and moved to a 3 bed house and paid £25 for water. Why the difference? We’re still the same people using the same appliances. What do others pay, and should I be calling thames water? Apparently it’s metred and we pay £28 per month!

How about gas and electricity what do you pay? I am using candles in the evening, all plugs off, more blankets and hot water bottles and jumpers I want to see how much we’ll save.
Thanks guys, it would be nice to hear from someone in the UK, especially those using thames water.

snap, same here in France for the water metered and i pre pay every month 37 euros ( around 28 pounds) 2 adults and a baby and wish i had a dishwasher but it’s me that washes dishes and i have to do a washing at least 5 or 6 times a week. Saying that i’ll probably end up having to pay more per month as they are awful good at coming round to read the meters and at the end of a certain period they can up your monthly payments to cover any excess in usage.

When the evening falls, it reminds us to turn on the lights of our homes. What would have happen if there will be no electricity in the future? Without its existence, we might have to live in a nomadic world. However, today we are living in an age where most of us have become dependable on the usage of electricity.

There are many electrical appliances or other kinds of gadgets in our homes. If there is a power failure for about an hour, then we burst out anger on the electricity supplier. Many of us do accuse them of charging huge electricity bills. Most of the consumers of electricity around the world always try their best to save much on their electricity bills.

It has been noticed that there is a large number of websites which directly or indirectly attached with various electricity suppliers. These websites provide all kinds of cheapest electricity deals as well as suggest many useful tips through which consumers can save a handsome amount from their monthly electricity bills. Haste your way to compare electricity price with the help of these websites and become a smart consumer.

There are people who are reluctant to accept new changes in their lives. Often new changes prove helpful for us. It has been noticed that some consumers have to endure huge monthly power bills just because they are using the services of the power supplier which charge lots of fees. There are other kinds of power suppliers which provide maximum benefits to the consumers and charge a minimum amount of money from them.

If you are not aware of such kinds of power suppliers, then you should get in touch with those websites which bring out a comparative study of the well-known power supplying companies. After verifying the charges among various service providers, you can choose one which will provide you reduced electricity bills. Nowadays, consumers can opt for two kinds of cheapest electricity services. The first service is the monthly payment of electricity bills and the second is taking the electricity contract period for a year or two. Both of these services have been quite popular.

You can choose any of these two cheapest electricity services which will suit you the best. However, one thing has to be noted that in case of the contract service a consumer has to pay a minimum amount of money to the power supplier till the completion of the contract period. As far as possible, one should go for those power suppliers which is well-known for supplying environmental electricity.

I fell behind on my bill because I was in the hospital and lost work. I am trying to set up an arrangement but they said they could not wait another week for my next paycheck and that they were going to disconnect my service if I didn’t pay the balance. I just need another week. I was told that they couldn’t cut electric off between Nov. 15th and April 15th. Does anyone know if that is a fact?

You can find WV (and other state) disconnection policies here: http://liheap.ncat.org/Disconnect/disconnect.htm#wv The operative dates for WV are between 12/1 and 2/28.

Many times the language you use with a utility representative makes a big difference. To say you want to delay the payment of your bill may make for an automatic refusal where suggesting a payment plan to start in a week may be acceptable. Also usually it is better to pay something than nothing even if you expect to make a full payment at a later date. Good luck with this.

At my house, for example. I use Spot Led lights that are powered by 2032 coin cell batteries, instead of high wattage bulbs.
I utilise solar battery chargers for mp3 player, palm pilots, cell phones. I use a car charger for my car battery. Just by learning how to balence the fluid, I can refurb the battery with out harming the enviorment. Or turning the battery in and pay the disposal fee.

I have also put all of my "instant on" tv’s, vcrs, and all electronics on on surge suppressors and turn the off switch to 0, when not in use.

I’m posting this to get newer ideas from other people, and maybe inspire them to use what i use. No politics here, just "What are you doing to cut down on your electric bill?

Get TAP Attic Insulation, Google, you will find it to be self explanatory. Excellent product, so happy I chose this particular brand. I have yet to turn on my air, because it makes that much of a difference. They give you a certificate that can be filed with your taxes, which allows a tax credit, dollar for dollar at 10% off of the total cost. Get 1-2 Oscillating Stand up Fans. If you face them towards a window, it will suck hot air out of the room and create a draft, on a hot day. Google, Power Saver 1200, my electric bill has been reduced $17 for the last two months. If you close one window and open another, it increases air velocity with a fan that is turned inward towards the room. Ceiling fans are great to have in the mix. Take a cool shower, or cool bath. If you have a washer and dryer, dry larger loads. Open windows at night, if not humid outside. The night air will cool your residence down, by morning. As earlier mentioned, flourescent lights make a notiecable difference. Again, under the current tax system, if you install a ceiling fan and keep the receipt and keep your receipt for the flourescent lights, it too qualifies towards a tax credit no more than $500.00 reported to the Fed. Now this is an old, old grandma technique, but it still works. If you have a table fan, put ice in a large bowl and set it in front of the fan on the highest setting. The air will blow cooler. As the ice melts you will get a cool mist blown in your directon. Try it. Last but not least, be sure you know how to read your electric bill, if you have a question call the electric company and schedule someone to come out and read your meter. Then have them show you. This way you know how to hold them accountable and better understand how you are spending your money for electrcity. My bill is $60-to$82 without the use of an air conditioner. When you turn on your computer, I hope this helps. lol.

A great change is seen in the way energy is consumed in UK. This is due to the real time electricity suppliers in United Kingdom. The list is endless and it is possible for people to find suppliers easily. The dealers of electricity have their own official websites and people just need to register themselves to these sites so as to avail the supply of electricity on a consistent basis.

It is advisory that people in UK search for the sites and subscribe themselves to their services so as to receive electricity on a constant basis. The subscribes are then permitted to make online payments of electricity bills. This saves a lot of time as users can avail the services and need not have to visit the offices (of the suppliers) personally in order to pay off the bills. So, now there is no need to stand in queues in order to pay off bills of electricity supply. The users feel satisfied as it saves them from the ordeal of having to personally visit offices of suppliers.

Information about the latest suppliers is available on the Internet. One can easily surf the Internet and open various websites so as to find the latest deals offered by the various suppliers in UK. It is, therefore, possible to compare electricity prices offered by the various suppliers. The customers can, therefore, avail the services from the suppliers of their choice at a much discounted price. It is thus possible to avail electricity supply from service providers at very low service charges.

The search for electricity suppliers on the Internet also helps people locate the different providers in UK. So, when a person is shifting his residence from one place to another then he can easily find the supplier without having to wrangle about the best provider of electricity in the region to where he is ‘moving in’. Moreover, the user can find the facility of instant access to services by registering online. This can be done before-hand while shifting ones residence.

United Kingdom is known for its relentless electricity supply. There are various dealers who provide electricity and, therefore, comparing them is a ‘must’. The reason is that all of them offer different deals and different prices. While users compare electricity prices of electricity suppliers, they should also make sure that the service provider to which one is planning to subscribe has a great reach and a good clientele ratio. This ensures their (the service providers) active service and leadership in providing electricity services.

Your bill tripled just because you are using a fiber-optic internet service??? Sounds like there is more to this… I would purchase a little device called "kill-a-watt" or similar device that you plug in to measure the amount of energy appliances use. See how many watts the device is pulling… then check out everything else you have plugged in around your house/apartment. I would suspect the high bills are caused by something else such as an electric heater or something similar.

Every year consumer debt in the UK increases and so more and more people are asking themselves the question how do I get out of debt?. At this point it may seem like an impossibility which is why this article provides some very sensible guidance to help you get your-self out of debt and the financial nightmare that you are presently in.

Currently interest rates are low due to the low state of the bank of England base rate. This has encouraged people to take on more and more credit in the belief that these debts are affordable. What this actually means is that at present even those people that think they can afford the repayments of credit may begin to struggle should interest rates begin to rise which is what they are predicted to do shortly according to leading experts in this field. If however, you are already struggling with your debts the situation is only likely to get worse.

Today is the time to begin to think about how you are going to get out of debt and build an action plan to reach your goal of making yourself ‘debt free’.
Congratulations! The very fact that you are reading this article means that you have made the first step to facing the problem and getting rid of your debt. Make no mistake your credit is your debt. You should begin to call it this as this will help you to realise your situation.

How bad is your debt situation?
The next step is to build a table of your current financial situation. List on the left hand side all your monthly incomings including your wages (after deductions like tax and national insurance), benefits, rent and any other income you have. Next on the right hand side list all your monthly outgoings apart from your debts. This should include your mortgage, rent, bills, food expenses, car or travel expenses, insurance, childcare and any other outgoings that you have. Now deduct your total outgoings from your total incomings and the figure that you have is your ‘maximum disposable income’ (MDI). Next write down all your debts and your monthly repayments. This may be scary but the sooner you face up to these and acknowledge these the sooner you can begin to do something about it. Now compare your total debt repayments to your maximum disposable income figure (MDI). You will find yourself in one of the following three situations;
1) Your MDI figure is more than your monthly debt repayments.

Should you find yourself in this situation you should consider increasing your debt repayments. Do not increase them to more than your MDI figure or you will be over committing yourself. However, by increasing your repayments you will pay off your debts sooner and so will pay less overall interest. This is far more cost effective that putting this extra money into a savings account.

2) Your monthly repayments exceed your MDI figure.
If you are in this situation you will be in a ’state of increasing debt’. This is a worrying and scary place to be. You are probably struggling with your repayments which are likely to be causing you significant stress. If not, you are perhaps only at this stage realising the situation you are in. Don’t panic as this is the time when we will begin to recontroll your finances effectively. Often those in this situation resort to drawing cash on one credit card to make minimum payments on another. This is what we call ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. STOP! This is not effective management of your finances don’t kid yourself. In fact what you are doing is making the situation worse. Credit card companies charge high fees for withdrawing cash from cards. You are also paying interest on this money twice. You are therefore getting yourself in more debt and this will snowball your finances further out of control. Let’s have a look at how to turn this around.

3) The two figures are more or less the same.
Don’t for one moment congratulate yourself. You are in debt. You are just about managing to make your repayments. You need to ask yourself some of the following questions;
* Where is money going to come from to deal with emergencies? Your credit card is not the answer.
* How would you cope if interest rates rise? This will increase all your repayments.
* What would you do if child care costs rise.
* What would you do if your travel costs increase train, petrol and insurance prices?
Any of your outgoings could and probably will rise. Wages don’t tend to rise at the same level as rising interest rates. They mostly tend to get left behind with inflation. You could soon find your self in situation number 2. You are effectively walking a tipe rope and need to get yourself on safe ground.
Let’s have a look then at how you can improve your situation with the following guidance.
Guidance Increasing your income
* Ask for a pay rise. If you don’t ask you won’t get!
* Consider working more hours or doing regular overtime.
* Look for a promotion or to change jobs to higher paid employer.
* Look for a second job to supplement your income.
* Claim every state benefits as you can call the benefit enquiry line on 0800 88 22 00.
* Consider a lodger a great source of additional income to the household.
* Sell any unwanted items. This could be through a car boot sale or over the internet on www.ebay.co.uk or www.amazon.co.uk/marketplace
*
Guidance Reducing your outgoings
* Reduce your food bill by buying stores own branded products instead of more expensive brands.
* Use supermarket vouchers and coupons and take part in their award schemes.
* Cut down on takeaways these are expensive and unnecessary.
* Take a packed lunch to work. This is far cheaper than buying lunch from the local sandwich shop every day.
* Give up smoking this will save you a small fortune.
* Cut down on child care costs by asking friends and family to help.
* Switch utility providers. Shop around for the cheapest deals on phones, electric, gas and water it costs nothing to change suppliers.
* Set up direct debits. This can gain you substantial discounts particularly with utility companies.
* Shop around for insurance you will be surprised at the savings you could make.
* Ask yourself ‘do you really need all the things listed on your outgoings list?’. Cancel things like gym memberships. It is a lot cheaper to pay for the facilities at your local authority leisure centre when and if you use them.

Guidance credit cards

    * Cut them up! Remember a credit limit is not money you have to spend it is the amount that the company is willing to get you in debt. Don’t use them again.
* Cancel any cards with nil balances. They are only a temptation for the future to get back in debt. You are moving forward not backwards.
* Transfer your balances to those companies that offer 0% on balance transfers and change them again a month before your 0% offer changes. Watch out though for those companies who have begun to charge fees for doing this.
* Use your savings to pay off your credit cards. There is no point in getting 3% interest on your savings and meanwhile paying 10% on your credit card balances.
* Pay more than the minimum payment on your credit card balance if and when you can. The longer that balance stay there the more interest you are paying.
* If you have more than one card pay off the most you can afford on the card with the highest interest first. Pay the minimum payments on the rest. When the highest interest card is paid off cancel the account and move on to the next. This way you minimalise the overall interest you are charged.
* If you cannot afford the minimum payments on any of the cards contact the companies and make arrangements to pay lower monthly repayments and include a budget planner of what you can afford. Ask that they freeze your interest while you get yourself out of the situation that you are in.
Guidance Loans and consolidation.
Consolidating all your credit into one loan can be beneficial. It can provide a simpler way to manage your finances. It will prevent you having many different repayments going out of your bank at different times of the month and never being able to see how much you actually have to spend. It can also sometimes mean reducing the overall interest you are paying. However you need to be careful;
* Check that your repayments are decreasing due to the interest rate reducing and that your debts have not just been spread over a longer period.
* Check the early repayment charges on your other credit/loans as these can be high and sometimes mean the consolidation route is not cost effective.
* Shop around for the best rates. Use a broker who will shop around for you but ask about any fees that they may charge. Ask if the brokers that you speak to are quoting you on the best rate that you qualify for or quoting you on a typical rate. If they are quoting you on a typical rate it is likely that you will be turned down or the rate will change when you send off all your application to them.
* Ask about early settlement penalties on this loan if you could afford to pay it off early and/or pay extra payments.
Guidance credit ratings

There are two main credit reference agencies in the UK. These are Experian and Equifax. You can write to these and request to see a copy of your credit file. Under the Data Protection Act you can ask to see any information companies have on you at any time. These two agencies normally ask you to send a £2 cheque for administrative purposes with your request for the file. Go through your file carefully. If there is incorrect information on the file about you there is an appeal process you can follow to get this information removed. You can also ask that notes be entered on your file therefore giving explanations to issues that show on the file. Visit their websites for more information.

Treadmills are often used in the home to save time and avoid the expense of going to a gym. You can easily read a book or watch over the kids while you work out on your home treadmill. Basic treadmill models can start at $100 and can go up to $5000.

Always choose a belt width that’s at least of 16 ” ands long enough to accommodate your stride. Treadmill cushioning absorbs the force of your step; get good cushioning to lower the impact on your joints and ligaments. Some treadmills fold up for easy storage which makes them an ideal choice for those with limited space in a small apartment, small house or condo.

One feature that is absolutely necessary in a home treadmill is an emergency stop button or a safety key that automatically shuts off the power if you should stumble, trip or fall. Features such as extra cup holders, built-in fans, CD players and other electronic gizmos may be handy but not essential for you to get an ideal workout. Notice that some treadmill heart rate monitors clip onto an ear or, for more accurate readings, strap onto the chest.

Some treadmills monitor your heart by way of sensors built into the frame that are gripped by your hands, but can only be done if you’re walking not running. Less expensive treadmill models require you to manually change the incline, which can be very frustrating if you want to make adjustments midway through a workout session.

A heart rate monitor enables a treadmill to automatically adjust the speed and/or the incline to keep your heart rate within the most optimum zone. The console indicates the belt speed and other factors, such as heart rate, miles per hour, and distance. People, who don’t have enough room for a bulky exercise machine, may want to consider a folding treadmill; they collapse to allow for easy storage.

You’ll probably want to buy a unit with a motor that delivers 1.5 to 3 continuous, not peak, horsepower. When your equipment is up and running, get the right lubricants and cleaners to take good care of it. You’ll want a treadmill with an aluminum or high alloy steel frame that’s strong enough to support the heaviest runner who’ll be using it.

Probably the most important thing to look for in a treadmill is to see how sturdy it is. Before buying, make sure the deck area provides enough space for you to exercise in comfort and the belt should work smoothly without slipping or sticking. Commercial club treadmills are reliable and well constructed; do look into a home version.

If there’s a treadmill you’ve enjoyed using regularly at your local gym or fitness center check to see if there’s a home version available in your price range. Buying a treadmill online has become the way to go for most people; it’ll save you both time and a lot of money. Your club commercial machine may be may be a good choice in a home version; you’re already familiar with its features and probably are comfortable using it.

When planning your purchase always take into account any other members of your family, or roommates, who’ll be using your treadmill. Once you’ve decided on the treadmill that you think is right for you, make sure to compare prices online with several different manufacturers.

Any treadmill with a belt that causes jerky movements while you walk or run should be avoided. Did I mention to make sure to check out the warranty fine print, this is very important.

Be careful, because any type of jogging or running, whether on a treadmill or not, puts strain on leg and hip joints. If you have severe problems with your legs, a treadmill may not be the best choice of home exercise equipment for you.

Selections of preprogrammed exercise routines are not essential to obtaining a good workout from a treadmill, but they do help to provide motivation. The lack of wind resistance makes running on a treadmill slightly easier than it would otherwise be on an equal elevation grade outdoors.

Spend some time shopping around, work out exactly what you need, and then shop online and offline so you can compare for the best price. Read the various treadmill ratings and treadmill reviews that you find online so you have an idea which models are best for you. By following the above tips you’re sure to find the best treadmill for you.
