For as long as there have been carpets, they have needed cleaning. However, vacuums and carpet cleaners are fairly recent inventions when you compare them to carpets. So how did people manage to clean carpets in the past? There are actually a lot of ideas they turned to. These methods today might seem a tad ridiculous to us, but people in the past swore by them, even going to the extent of actually publishing the techniques in various books and even immortalizing the various methodologies in paintings.

One of the commonly employed methods of carpet cleaning is beating the carpet with a stick. Each carpet section was often hung out on a clothesline in the sun and then beat with a stick in order to loosen and embedded dirt and to shake off any accumulated dust. This method of carpet cleaning is so popular that some people actually use this method today in cleaning area rugs.

This method of carpet cleaning was quite tedious, as other techniques were during this period. Because of this, emphasis was placed on protecting the carpet from dirt and wear. This was done by using druggets to cover up any areas and protect the carpet from spills. Druggets were often used in children’s rooms and other potential problem areas. As such, one can often see them depicted in various painting and illustrations.

Another great idea for past carpet cleaning lay not in a separate method, but in the carpet itself. Some carpets were actually reversible, enabling people to hide stains and gain a fresh carpet when the urgent need arises. Thus, stains can be hid quickly by simply turning the carpet over.

Stain removal is also a very important part of carpet cleaning. Even back in the past, spills were actually quite common and a lot of substances could not be removed by simple washing with soap. Common problematic substances were oil –from lamps- and ink –since ball-point pens have not yet been invented. With ink, people often used lemons in order to remove the problematic stain. With oil, people used lemon juice and a good brushing with bread crust to absorb the oil and get rid of it.

Sweeping the carpet was also a very necessary task in those days, and as such, also enjoyed a variety of ideas both in method of sweeping and the implements to be used in the task. A lot of people swore by the use of tea leaves in sweeping the carpet, mainly because the tea deodorized the carpet effectively. However, tea leaves also tended to leave stains on the carpet when used improperly. Some people also suggested using grass for carpet cleaning, claiming to freshen up the carpet more effectively. Another common toll used in this part of carpet cleaning is a corn broom, claimed to restore the carpet to a brand-new look.

Another substance used in Chicago carpet cleaning was ox-gall. A few tablespoons of ox-gall, when added to warm water, was claimed to serve as a great solution when the carpets need washing. The solution is said to revive the carpet colors effectively, making the carpet look brand-new. A lot of companies actually still manufacture ox-gall soap today for use in carpet cleaning.

Of course, there came the invention of the vacuum cleaner. Did you know that old carpet cleaners were not even powered by electricity? Rather, they were designed to be operated by hand, creating a partial vacuum every time the appliance was swept over the carpet. Soon, though, these manual carpet cleaners were rendered obsolete by the introduction of the electric vacuum cleaner.

So there you go: it’s amazing what we’ve learned by taking a quick look at the history of carpet cleaning.

For example, if you send the electric company half of what is owed, will they shut you off? Same question for cell phones, cable, car payment. I live in NJ. Are there any places(legititmate) that can assist me in making payments to these debtors and still keep my utilities on and keep my car(which I have no choice or I will owe more than the car is worth and I can’t get refinancing) and my place to live? I am $600. short this month because of my husband losing his job and taking a pay cut from another job and second jobs at this time are impossible. Any help would be great.
The electric company will not work payment plans, so I figured if I send something they, couldn’t say I wasn’t paying anything. The people at the finance co. for the car finally tell me after being 2 mos behind that I can make partial payments. It seems that no one knows the right answer when you talk to different people at different times to discuss payment options/extension. Anyone out there been in my spot and what did you do to fix it? NJ answers only please.
Tried to get a short term loan, but no one will help me right now, and I am considering trying one of those high interests loans just to stay afloat until my husband gets a better job.
In order to get help from the church, you have to be a member of a church and I cannot take their money, there are people way worse off than I am. I asked for assistance once for the electric, but money has gotten even worse, so I have no other recourses that I can see.
Unfortunetely, the creditors don’t want to hear anything but when are we getting paid. So what I am going to do is pay what I can and send a letter with it, if they cash the check, then they are agreeing with the agreement. Amanda, I bet that site was amazing, but it is no longer available. Everyone had great ideas, but I think at this point, since I have exhausted every suggestion, I will take my chances and pay what I can. Thanks again.

Well, usually with utilities they will give you the littlest amount that you have to pay so you don’t get shut off. It’s usually stated on the billing statement. But, when it comes to trying to do it with the rent, I would have to say NOPE, and I’m not sure about the car. Maybe you could work it out with the company and stuff like that, but I’ve never heard of being able to do that.

With today’s political environment focusing on keeping everything as green as possible, the use of photoluminescent materials in sustainable building design is an idea whose time has come. The employment of photoluminescent exits signs and other self-luminous emergency egress indicators is an easy choice given all the advantages they afford. Let’s take a brief look at some of the reasons why using these types of emergency exit signs is a terrific idea.

First of all, photoluminescent materials are about as environmentally friendly as you can get. These exit signs use no electricity, consume no batteries, and are virtually maintenance-free. There is no more hard wiring, having to search out electrical problems, or the constant purchase and disposal of batteries. You simply mount these exit signs to the wall and forget about them. They collect and store the ambient light that is available when the building is in use, and make that energy available when there is an emergency need. If the need arises, these photoluminescent exits signs can store enough of this energy to stay illuminated for up to three days. They are visible to a distance of around 100 feet in dark or smoky conditions, serving as a beacon during a blackout or fire.

As a result of this energy conservation, these photoluminescent exits signs can save your company thousands of dollars yearly in energy costs, as well as dramatically improve the carbon footprint left by your building. Use of photoluminescent materials in your sustainable building design can reduce air pollution by nearly a half a million pounds of CO2 when compared with incandescent signs over the life of the product. They are also 100% recyclable, and when or if you ever have need to dispose of them, they can simply go into the nearest metal recycling container. They are easy to install and a snap to move if needed; simply move the mounting to the new desired location.

Compare this to the hands-on time and energy required by incandescent signs and the other choice, tritium signs. Incandescent exit signs pose problems such as replacement, electrical issues, and more. Tritium exit signs are a wholly different matter, and have a large number of undesirable issues. They are made of a radioactive substance that is tracked and regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and require special handling by a certified hazardous materials expert to dispose of properly. Moreover, they are no longer manufactured in the US because of environmental concerns and must now be imported from abroad. There are other issues to consider, but I think toxic waste is just about enough for anyone!Â

The best solution in luminescent signs available today is a company called Jessop Manufacturing, who have been in business since 1956. They offer a wide range of eco-friendly exits signs and egress indicators, available at a very reasonable cost and in several colors and configurations. They have become the unquestioned leader in this market, and you can find their products online at GloBriteSystem.com.

Beside A/C the domestic hot water heater is a major load. Occasional clothes dryer. Occasional kitchen oven. All others are minor, but accumulative. Utilities will put optional demand limiters on A/C and on domestic water heaters and give you some credit.

Raise the setting on your thermostat; you will get used to it. Mine is at 78F. Use the ceiling fans. And lower the thermostat during the heating season. I use 70F.
Minimize hot water use in showers, laundry. You can hang your clothes outside to dry.
Cook less. Minimize water in cooking. Use the smaller appliances instead of the large oven.
Plant shade trees. See that you have adequate ceiling insulation – a minimum of 9 inches of aluminum foil – faced batts, 12 inches in cold climate. You should already have a vapor barrier between the ceiling sheet rock and the ceiling joists so put the foil on top. See that the attic space is properly ventilated – it can get extremely hot in the summer.

We can’t pay our bill for a couple days so they are shutting us off.
They said the 26th but that lands on a saturday. I heard they are not open on the weekends?
So will our power be cut off on Monday instead?

Also, does that include the water? Will that be cut off too?

Your situation could be easily resolved by setting up a payment plan. You need to call and discuss that with someone. If you’re just ignoring your bill though, then yes, they can and will shut off your power and water on a weekend. The billing office and customer service lines may not be available on weekends, but there are people working on weekends. All it takes is a press of one button to shut you down.
———————-
Cool that you can still afford internet access though.
