My friend always tell me that if I wash clothes at night, it would help cut electric bills because according to him electricity is cheaper at this time from 6PM til 6AM.

He is thinking of the Economy 7 tarriff where electricity is very cheap for 7 hours from 11pm to 6am or midnight to 7am depending on BST or not.

It was designed to make it cheaper to use electric storage heaters which heat up overnight.

You need a special 2 rate meter and for the electricity company to bill you accordingly.

No its only cheaper if you have storage heaters and have an ‘economy 7′ tariff or such which means you do get the cheaper rates. have a look on the website of ur provider

Yeah after 6 or 9 at night when the deamnd for electric is low (because all the places that use high electric are closed then e.g shops, factories etc), so they sharge you lower rates than daytime

Tall Paul is right… but you would have to contact the electricity company to see which tariff you are on, as there is no point in being on the tarriff for storage heaters if you don’t use them. Conact the company to make sure you are on the optimum tarriff, and shop around a bit, as prices can vary massively – for example British gas cost me about £15 a month more than the hydro – big difference!!

This statement is false, because the electric meter that exist at your house or any one’s house is not programmed to do this, but it is true –in general- that electric consumption will be less from 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

its not cheaper if you are on an ordinary day tarrif, however if you have night storage heaters.or economy storage heaters and a two rate( 2 dial) meter then your power will be cheaper at night ,the time for the cheap rate varies from supply company and area you live in

i don’t think that’s true because u have a meter outside that runs and keeps track overall what u use. they read the meter once a month to see how much overall u use. that is what they bill u. now it does help conserve energy and keep down the cost of electricity overall for everyone because it is easier for them to produce electricity during these hours when demand on the system is not as great.

You’ll need a two-rated meter. It’s much cheaper at night for about 7hrs, but the day-time rate is dearer. Overall you’ll pay more unless you have night storage heating.

Most consumers don’t have time-of-day billing rates. The electric companies would like to do that however. Look on your bill – that will tell you that there are tiered rates for total KWH in a month, but not time of day.
