It’s easy to see your beautiful landscape during the daytime, and usually that’s the only time you think about it. But why not enjoy those scenes at night as well, with lighting that will accentuate and add beauty to every setpiece.

There’s an extra element to landscaping that many people don’t even think about, and that’s lighting. In broad daylight, of course, there’s no need for lighting, as you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy your front or backyard, meticulously designed just the way you want it, with no problem at all. But, what’s the point in lighting your yard at night, you’ll be asking yourself.

Security
Outdoor lights are one of the best accessories you can add to your home from a security issue. Everyone should have a porch light, so those hard-working pizza drivers can find your house if nothing else! But with a porch light or a lamp post illuminating your front door, this provides extra security against intruders.

And it’s not even so much to guard against intruders. Who hasn’t fumbled with their keys when trying to fit a key into a lock they can’t see? Placing a row of lights next to your garden paths can ensure that unsuspecting feet don’t step off into the flower beds.

Accents
Why just be able to enjoy the beauties of your gardens at night? With strategically placed lights you can enjoy your miniature fountains or waterfalls, water gardens or rock gardens at any time. Indeed, they may even look more spectacular at night. And its not just a question of accenting your garden. By lighting up your entire home with carefully placed spotlights, it can be made a work of art in itself.

Celebrating the seasons
Lots of people put up lights for the holidays – and go to a great amount of trouble stringing lights on their garage and on the eaves of their house. Then, two weeks later, they go through all the trouble of taking those lights down again. By designing a lighting system that will be semi-permanent, you remove the need for all that extra work. Simply change out the bulbs for those of different colors, depending on the season.

Where’s the power come from?
Give a thought to your lighting needs. If you choose line voltage fixtures that can get their power from your home’s electrical system, you’ll want the wires to run underground. You’ll want to have these installed by a professional. Also, make sure that you have a plan of where these underground wires are installed, because if you do any digging in future – or if you sell the home and the new owner wants to do some digging – it will be all too easy to cut through these wires if no one knows where they are.

The other choice that also works great, is to use solar light fixtures. These feature a solar cell that absorbs energy from the sun and stores it in rechargeable batteries. These types of lights are easily installed by the homeowner, but how long they will last can be a question.

To find out what kinds of lights are available, visit your local home and garden or home improvement center. However, a lot of companies offer their wares on the web as well. Seagull Lighting has practically every type of outdoor light you can imagine, as does Lights by Lighthouse.

Would it be possible for the average suburban home to function entirely on solar panel energy? This means using heaters in the winter, a/c in the summer, cooking meals, watching tv and using computers. Things that an average family does, nothing outrageous.
PS: I’m not asking for liberal propaganda, I’m asking for an answer to my question. (JJ)

The cost and size of the panels would make that idea impossible at this time. We had a solar company come out and evaluate our house and they told us, solar is no where near ready for home use. Some large buildings with flat roofs in very sunny areas can get some of their power from panels, but that’s about it.

They did mention that there are small solar kits for running hot water heaters. But the cost of installation would take about 10 years to recoup in savings on heating water.

In this article we will cover some easy and simple things you can do to save energy and help reduce your monthly energy bill. Think Green!

Green Investments:
A good place to start is with your light bulbs. If you’re still using incandescent bulbs, you should switch to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs or regular fluorescent bulbs. Many cities in the United States have an exchange program, where your city will replace your incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs -at no cost.

Green Power Save gadget:
This handy gadget will help to monitor the supply of power to your home and regulate the usage. It will use the minimum needed to supply all your power needs.

Green Usage:
The first thing you need to do is become aware of the extra energy your using. When you go to another room, be sure to turn of the lights. Even if you are gone for only a few minutes, this will help to get yourself trained to continually turn off unneeded appliances.

Your Green Perception:
What do you perceive as an electronic appliance? Would you turn off a TV or a
radio, but not the reading lamp? These small and simple tasks will help in a huge
way to reduce your energy usage.

Green Appliance Usage:
If we start thinking green when it comes to using our major home appliances, we can eliminate the myth that the more gadgets we have, the higher our power bills will be. Some of the typical high energy usage appliances include:

Washer and Dryer- Try do laundry only when you have full loads, and if possible, try switching to a gas dryer.

Water Heater- Set the water heater to be on the minimum amount of time, and if possible, switch to a tankless water heater.

You might think that purchasing these new appliances defeats the purpose of saving money on your energy bill. However, you will find, most of the time, that you will get an energy credit on your taxes for making this purchase, and saving energy in the long term.

Heater & Air Conditioner- By setting these appliances to only the minimum amount required to be comfortable, you can greatly reduce the energy they use.

Computer- By turning off your computer monitor when you take a break can make a huge difference. It only takes a second to turn it back on… think of it as a light bulb.

You must stick to this energy saving lifestyle to reduce your energy bills and help save the world. We need to stop thinking about ourselves, and think of the next generations to come!

we are looking at solar power for our new land, are you a family of 5? have you done this before, thanks.

Hey Hotmumma, I applaud you for looking into solar power. In my experience, when you look into solar power, the one thing there is an abundance of is misinformation.

We live in a home that has been powered by the wind and sun for 10 years now. Our solar array fits quite nicely on the space provided by our one car carport, it generates 1.4 kilowatts during peak sun, and does not need thousands of square feet of space. Our entire system, including the wind turbine, battery bank and other electronics costs less than $15,000 USD. After state incentives, tax deductions and the small amount we receive selling carbon credits to industry, our cost is just under $10,000. We do have a small, efficient home, just under 1,200 square feet, but the point is clear, you don’t need to mortgage your sisters second home to pay for it. We still have the utility company here, but our monthly bills average about $6. I would estimate our payback at 10 to 12 years, but that is not the main reason we did all of this.

Last year, there were two power failures in our county, each lasting about half a day. In both cases, we were not aware of them. It’s difficult to put a price tag on something like that. There is also the fact that when we do a load of laundry, or run the TV, we are not adding CO2 to the air and mercury to the water because our power is not sourced from a coal power plant. In a few years,we plan on replacing one of our cars with a plug in hybrid, which will charge from our solar array once we add a few more panels to it, at a cost of about $1,000. This will allow us to have transportation in town with virtually no environmental footprint, or any need to buy gasoline.

Beyond our own personal benefits, having a solar powered home has made us the defacto expert on the field in our town. To that end, we started running solar power seminars at our local school several years ago. We spend an hour or so with the 5th graders in school, hooking up a panel, battery, and some small loads so they can learn how it works. Then they run a field trip out to our place to see a working solar powered home first hand. Our hope is that in several more years, they will grow up to persue the same thing you are today.

Powering your home from solar power requires more than mere technology however, it requires some lifestyle changes. People who grow their own tomatoes know a great deal about soil, watering, bugs and sunlight because they have to. Even though it might be cheaper to buy them at the store, they go to the trouble to maintain a garden. People who grow their own electrons instead of buying them at the power company have a similar curse. They have to know where each one goes in their home. When you power your home from renewable sources, there is no such thing as an, "Average House," or "Standard Size Panel." Every situation is different. No matter how well you plan your system, or how many contingencies you allow for, there will always be a day where you have a shortage of power. Most solar homeowners I know have a generator for just such a shortage, but they work hard to run it as little as possible. Like I said, it’s a lifestyle, and only you can decide if it’s right for you. What I would suggest is you do some more research, beyond asking people who have never tried it for advice over the internet. First get a subscription to Home Power Magazine, the only periodical devoted to these things. Then check out some of the non profit groups I have listed below. Learn what you can, try to make it to one of the renewable energy fairs in your area. In the end you might decide not to get involved at all, and that’s fine. At least you will be well informed. Good luck, and take care, Rudydoo

When considering the magnificent effects that gems and stones lend to fertility, it is very interesting to note that the use of gems and stones for their magical properties has been in practice for hundreds of years. And although diamonds may be a girl’s best friend today, how do diamonds compete with other gems and stones for lust and fertility? If your partner is feeling inspired for the all-important approaching Valentine’s Day, or perhaps a birthday, anniversary, special holiday, or just some amazing fertility surprise… these tips are for him.

For pearls of wisdom, remember that the Pearl is a product of the oyster, and the oyster just happens to be nature’s finest aphrodisiac. Pearls may range in color from white to black, but are commonly pale and shimmery. The magical properties of the pearl bring the wonderful gifts of peace of mind, focus, wisdom, patience, protection and love. And these are all properties that are important to the pearl’s finest magic – fertility! Legend has it that pearls are so closely related to fertility because of the time and patience that it takes for one oyster to produce just one pearl, much like the time and patience it takes to create one beautiful baby.

Or perhaps the choice is green. The green hues of the Emerald are symbolic of fertility, but this stone goes far beyond its color in its powers and properties to bring successful love, ensure domestic tranquility, stimulate the heart, arouse deep awareness, and bring good fortune and happiness. For what more could you ask in preparation for a baby?

And then there’s the Ruby. And rubies are not just for Tuesday! Red in color, the ruby is the gemstone of power and passion. Its properties range from stimulating love and emotions to promoting mental concentration. The ruby also protects the wearer against unhappiness, and is even reputed to prevent miscarriage. Good spirits are said to dwell in the stone, so to maintain the joy, passion and love at home, bring on the ruby.

You might want to consider Quartz, both clear and rose. As a wonderful touch of magic, if you hold clear quartz at your solar plexus and steady your breathing for several minutes, your body will relax, your mind will clear, your emotions will calm, and your energy will surge. Need we say more? And rose quartz, known as the love stone, stimulates both the heart and blood and consequently other organs as well. If that is not enough, rose quartz is also known to stimulate sexual energy and to enhance fertility. All of this power in such a little stone! So place one (or more) on the body part of your choice, near your body or bodies, in your bedroom, or anywhere that the two of you meet for delicious intimacy or passionate love-making.

Or for a baby-making night to remember, consider the Moonstone. A cloudy-white feldspar stone, the moonstone is said to hold an image of the actual moon. Lovers have long revered the moonstone for its power to enhance passion, and for your purposes, moonstone also promotes fertility. Use your moonstone to glow all night long.

And let’s not forget Garnet, a stone that is reputed to increase circulation to the pelvic area and whose properties include vitality, strength and energy. If that’s not enough, garnet also enhances sexual stimulation and fertility. As a touch of magic, a garnet placed over your uterus and ovaries will reduce menstrual discomfort and restore physical health.

So back to Diamonds. Although not a traditional lust or fertility gem, the diamond possesses the magical properties of permanence, fidelity, strength and protection… four very important and powerful qualities when multiplying your love by conceiving a child. So when all is said and done, maybe diamonds really are a girl’s best friend!

For Valentine’s gift giving, a fertility surprise, (or any special day), keep in mind that all gems and stones are rich in symbolic representations. It is the gift itself that makes the magic, especially if you are aware of the powers. Keep in mind too that most gems and stones can be found in the grandest or tiniest of specimens. Size doesn’t matter, right? The romance, lust and fertility come with the spirit of the giving and the power of the love.
