When the question arises for utilizing the new sources of energy for your home to reduce the electrical costs, you may be thinking at first about the solar power and you may even question yourself “Is it worthy?” A simple answer for this question is “Yes!” The solar power for home is one of the easiest methods to reduce your home electric bill and by the side you are helping even the environment by installing the solar power for your home in many ways.
The solar power for home uses the sun’s radiation to produce variety of functions which includes cooking and other electricity generation. You are going “Green” by using the solar power which ultimately helps your budget and also the environment. The United States government offers even a tax incentive for those people who install solar power for their home.
When you plan to use the solar power for your home, you really don’t have to rely on many companies for fixing the apparatus. It is one of the easiest ways to change to solar power from the electricity. It will be a freeing experience when you come to know that you are generating power from solar. Since the solar power is very clean and renewable, the upfront costs for installing may be an issue for many people.
When you build a solar power for your home, you need not worry about building it near the power lines or grids. You are free to install it wherever you want provided you keep the solar panel in nature and once fixed you will be having a very clean and renewable source of solar power. Solar energy helps in keeping our environment healthy in many beautiful ways. One million of solar power usage is equal to taking out nearly 1 million of cars out of the city. It helps in reducing the usage of petroleum, natural gas, and also coal for every year.

The fridge is an appliance with one of the biggest consumption of electricity in a typical household. So it pays to explore simple ways in which we can make savings on energy consumption of the fridge.
Here are some of the top tips for saving electricity on your fridge:
1. Let food cool down a little first before putting it into the fridge, as the fridge uses up more electricity in order to bring the temperature of warm or hot foods down.
2. Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly. Frost makes the freezer run more inefficiently and consume more energy than necessary.
3. Place the fridge away from appliances such as an oven or a dishwasher. It should also stand away from direct sunlight.
4. Leave a couple of inches of space around the fridge so that air can circulate around the condenser coils. This helps the heat generated from the fridge to dissipate quicker.
5. Place the fridge along an outside wall, if possible, for the heat generated to be removed more easily.
6. Defrost frozen food in the fridge as this helps cool the fridge as the food thaws.
7. Keep the number of door openings to a minimum, and when the door is open, don’t open it for too long. If a lot of cold air escapes, the fridge has to work harder to chill the air back down.
8. For the same reasons as the tip above, check that the seal between the door and the fridge is airtight and not leaking cold air when the door is shut.
9. Avoid putting the fridge in an environment subject to extreme summer and winter temperatures such as an uninsulated garage. For example, a fridge working in a 90F environment can consume 45 to 50% more energy than one working in a 70F environment.
10. Measure your fridge electricity consumption with an electricity monitor. If you have an old fridge, use the monitor to help you decide if you should upgrade to a newer, more energy efficient model.
Regarding the last point, a leading manufacturer has come up with an electricity monitor that not only measures the electricity consumption but also works out the projected annual cost of running an electric appliance such as a fridge. You input the electric rate found on the utility bill and it does the calculation for you. For more accurate results, let the electricity monitor run for a week or so.
Once you have a number for the projected annual costs of your old fridge, you can then shop around for a new fridge. These days a new fridge comes with an energy guide label that tells you the estimated amount of electricity it uses per year and the estimated yearly operating costs. When you compare the operating costs between the old and the new fridges, you will find it easier to decide whether it makes sense to upgrade.

I don't have a flame stove…its electric stove
stove uses a lot of electricity than oven because in electric stove operation u have to apply constant voltage (e.g electric heater). In oven we have an inductive coil which usually lag the power factor but this lagging is not more than stove electricity consumption..
I was up late one night and saw this informercial on a product to convert your whole house to solar power. I forgot the website or company name. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
There are numerous websites online that teach you how to ocnvert to solar. However, I would tend to take an infomerical with a grain of salt. There are hundreds of horror storys from infomerical purchases.
Your best bet would be to search "Home Solar Conversion Kit" on yahoo or google.
If the govt wants us to convert, why aren't they demanding that it be CHEAP?
moderately… no less expensive install it yourself. That's what I'm doing now with 3 wind turbines on top of my garage, and hopefully in a year or so when Nanosolor drops photovoltaic cells to 10 cents a watt due to decreased production cost I'll install a 5-10 kwatt array on my house roof. The us dept. of energy has a rebate program where they will reimburse 50% of the cost, but you don't get your check till after it's installed. Also you can file with the irs and state tax dept. to list your house as an energy creation zone, making the checks you get from the electric company tax free.
Any surplus you produce goes back to the grid for your neighbors to use – this means that your meter will turn backwards so your selling electricity to the utility companies. THEY ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO PAY YOU FOR THIS. which means if your average usage is less than your consumpion you get a check from them at wholesale rate which they in turn bill your neighbors who use this power at retail.
Anyway after rebate and tax credits and surplus checks I estimate the ROI (return on investment) to be 3 years less maintaince after that it's tax free income provided you file for this zone change before it expires.
It was about $97 for this month. I want to know what else I can do besides turn off the plugs when I'm not using them.
- compact fluroescents are great. If you don't already have them, replace all the bulbs in your house. You will see a difference in your bill. Shop around, though. Home Depot charges several dollars for a c.f. bulb, but a hardware store near me sells the same wattages for only $1.
- Is your hot water heater electric? If so, take shorter showers. Wash clothes with cold water only (it makes little to no difference.) Buy a $20 hot water heater 'blanket' wrap. Insulate pipes with the black pipe foam, that's inexpensive.
- Is your heat electric? If so, consider investing in a programmable thermostat that will automatically turn down the heat when you are not there, or when you're sleeping. Insulate drafty windows with the shrink plastic, insulate doors with weatherstripping. A $4 tube of caulk can permanently seal leaks and drafts.
- Do you fall asleep with the TV on? Use your TV's sleep timer so that it's not on all night.
- If you have an electric dryer, consider hanging up a few (or all) items to air dry.
- If you are baking or warming up something very small, try using the toaster oven instead of using more energy to heat up the entire oven range.
- Turn off lights when you leave the room, even if you're coming back soon. It's a myth that it takes more energy to turn it on that it does to keep it on. (MythBusters proved it!)
- Consider replacing old appliances. When my ancient fridge finally died and I replaced it with a $400 stainless steel Energy Star fridge (it was on sale), my electric bill dropped from an average of $100/month to $40/month! You can see the new fridge paid for itself in no time.
- Beware the vampire appliances. Those things that you aren't really using but are still sucking a little energy all the time, like the VCR that shows the time. Studies have shown that this kind of energy use can account for a significant percentage of your bill. If you have devices plugged into a power strip, it's better to turn off the entire power strip if possible, to ensure
- Call your electric company and ask for an energy audit/evaluation. Even if the electric company doesn't do it, they should be able to refer you to another agency that does them for free for their customers. In my experience these advisors do not have much to offer that you don't already know, but it's free so it's worth a shot. Some even offer programs that give you money to make recommended upgrades or changes.
