fire, gas, electric, wood fire, ice blocks and a fan? What works for you, how green is it and why it works for you? Anyone have any additional costs associated with installing or using these options? Any installation professional, or self? What would you say are pros and cons to alternative power sources? What do you think is the cheapest, easiest way to power a home? Would like to hear from folks who have added alternative power sources to their homes and hear your experiences.

I have just answered a Q. similar to this,My G/Fs small holding has no mains, water, sewage, gas or electricity we have a genny that runs the washing machine, T.V & charges a large battery pack we have bottled gas for cooking & heating filtered rain water for showering & washing clothes, a composting toilet, all waste water is collected to water the veggys, when we've finished our waste 'gulper' we should be able to produce our own gas, the genny runs on bio fuel which we produce & the back up petrol genny runs on methenol, which we also produce, we dont pay any utility bills, how cheap do you want to run? you can only watch T.V for a couple of hours a night, but we've got all mod cons!

In the context of the home, you usually cannot generate power at stable enough voltage and frequency for reliable use.

So what they do is to generate DC (Direct Current) power, and then this is fed into an inverter, which converts it to AC at your supply voltage and frequency. The inverter is an electronic unit. Sometimes, there can be a battery banka as well, so that when everyone else is blanked out, you stll have power.

You will have to have some connection made to the house wiring, so this needs to be done by a registered electrician.

By the way, in principle, the same applies to solar energy panels.

I have heard that unplugging lamps, appliances and the such that are not in use could lower the montly bills. Is this true?

It is true that unplugging appliances can save you some money…because some appliances use energy even when they are switched off. However, the biggest power user in your home needs to be plugged in all the time…your refigerator. To minimize power use, try reducing the freezer and refigeration settings to the lowest practical ones that will still keep your items cold. If it has an ice maker, refrain from using it and buy bagged ice or use ice cube trays instead. In the rest of your home, two big power consumers are your heating/cooling system and oddly enough, your computer. Set your thermostats to the lowest/highest setting that will still provide you comfort, and check around doors and windows for air leaks; this is where a lot of your heating/cooling $ goes…out the window or door. Don't leave your computer on all day if you aren't using it. Even in standby mode it is still consuming more energy than if it was switched off. Also, keep hot water use to a minimum; hot water heaters also are significant energy consumers. If you go to the government's dept. of energy site they have a lot of handy hints for saving money on utility bills. Hope this info helps.
